SUMMARY:Alabama Hills & Bristlecone Pines Workshop
DESCRIPTION: Registration for this event is closed.\n  \nThe Alabama Hills are a range of hills and rock formations near the eastern slope of the Sierra Nevada in the Owens Valley\, west of Lone Pine. \nDozens of natural arches are among the main attractions at the Alabama Hills. They can be accessed by short hikes from the Whitney Portal Road\, the Movie Flat Road\, and the Horseshoe Meadows Road. Among the prominent arches of the area are Mobius Arch\, Lathe Arch\, the Eye of Alabama and Whitney Portal Arch. \nThe Alabama Hills are a popular filming location for television and movie productions\, especially Westerns set in an archetypical “rugged” environment. Since the early 1920s\, 150 movies\, and about a dozen television shows have been filmed here\, including Tom Mix films\, Hop Along Cassidy films\, The Gene Autry Show\, The Lone Ranger and Bonanza. Classics such as Gunga Din\, The Walking Hills\, Yellow Sky\, Springfield Rifle\, The Violent Men\, Bad Day at Black Rock (1955)\, the Budd Boetticher/Randolph Scott “Ranown” westerns\, part of How the West Was Won\, and Joe Kidd. In the late 1940s and early 50s the area was also a popular location for the films of B-western actor Tim Holt. \nMore recent productions such as Tremors and Joshua Tree were filmed at “movie ranch” sites known as Movie Flats and Movie Flat Road. In Gladiator\, actor Russell Crowe rides a horse in front of the Alabama’s\, with Mount Whitney in the background\, for a scene presumably set in Spain. Star Trek Generations was filmed here in addition to Overton\, Nevada and Paramount Studios. This range was one of the filming locations for Disney’s Dinosaur. More recently\, many parts of the films Iron Man and Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen were filmed here. \n  \nITINERARY & ACCOMMODATIONS\n\nPlease reference the event itinerary (recently updated) for day-to-day details.\nIf you need recommendations for accommodations\, please click here.\n\n  \n\n  \nENTRY COST\n\nIEPPV Premium Members = FREE\nIEPPV Introductory and Professional Members = $250\nNon-IEPPV Members = $425\n\n  \nREGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS\nIEPPV Premium\, Professional\, and Introductory Members: \nYour membership number is required at registration or you cannot complete the registration process. SUMMARY:Cleaning Your Camera Sensor
DESCRIPTION: Registration is now closed\n  \nWhat are those dark spots in the sky? \nThis is one of the most-frequently asked questions about digital cameras and it relates to sensor dust and cleaning. \nSome people know they have sensor dust while others only know that there are spots in their images. Some even blame the spots on their lens. Though while logical at first\, it takes a sizeable piece dust on/in a lens to show up as a prominent spot in a picture – especially if it is on the front lens element. \n  \nTO CHECK FOR DUST\n\nYou need a newly charged battery in the camera\nFind a clean\, well-lit work area\nMount a 50mm or longer lens on your DSLR camera\nFind an evenly-light-colored\, evenly-lit background for a test shot – a blue sky\, a white wall\, a piece of paper\, etc.\nSet the lens to manual focus and set the focus to make your selected subject completely Out of Focus. You want to see the dust – not the subject.\nAdding motion blur to your test image is all-the-better.\nYou may want to turn off IS if your lens is so-equipped though it won’t hurt to leave it on.\nOn the camera\, set your exposure mode to Av\, ISO to 100 and – very important – set the aperture to at least to f/22.\nTake the test picture.\n\nIf your sensor is dirty\, you will see spots in your test image. They are especially easy to see if you load the test shot into your computer and increase the contrast. Reviewing the test shot on your LCD is faster and works just fine. Zoom into the image 2 or 3 levels and pan through the image systematically looking for spots. Remember\, the location of the dust on the sensor will be exactly opposite of where it appears in the image on the LCD (the lens flips the image\, the camera de-flips it for viewing). When you turn the camera 180 degrees to look into the chamber\, the spot will now be flipped up/down only. \nThere are many sensor cleaning methods. Start with the easiest and least intrusive cleaning method and move down more difficult ones until you have a clean sensor. \nWhen the sensor cleaning is finished\, clean up and reset your camera to your normal settings. Be sure to set focus to AF. Be careful\, relaxed and patient while cleaning your sensor\, you will do a better job. Relaxing will become easier after you become familiar with sensor cleaning methods. \nSo how do we keep dust off of the sensor in the first place? Well\, you may not be able to prevent it – DSLRs often have with dirty sensors right out of the box. But aside from that\, a little care can minimally prolong a necessary sensor cleaning. \nProbably the most significant dust-prevention you can do is to change lenses quickly (but still carefully) in a dust-free environment. On a windy day outdoors\, the amount of airborne dust is extremely high. \n  \n\n\nENTRY COST\n\nIEPPV Premium Members = FREE\nIEPPV Introductory and Professional Members = $20\nNon-IEPPV Members = $30\n\n\nREGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS\nIEPPV Premium\, Professional\, and Introductory Members: \nYour membership number is required at registration or you cannot complete the registration process. SUMMARY:Boudoir Photography
DESCRIPTION:The term “boudoir” is ascribed to a specific genre of photography.  Boudoir photography is not generally a new concept and numerous examples including images of Clara Bow\, Mae West and Jean Harlow photographed in a boudoir style from the 1920s through the 1940s. \nToday\, it is typically shot in a photographer’s studio or luxury hotel suites and it has become fashionable to create a set of sensual or sexually suggestive images of women in “boudoir style”. The most common manifestation of contemporary boudoir photography is to take variations of candid and posed photographs of the subject partly clothed or in lingerie. Nudity is more often implied than explicit. \nCommercially the genre is often derived from a market for brides to surprise their future husbands by gifting the images on or before their wedding day. Other motivations or inspiration for boudoir photography shoots include anniversaries\, birthdays\, Valentine’s Day\, breast augmentation and for servicemen and women overseas.  Boudoir photography is typically distinguished from other photography genres such as glamour photography\, fine art nude photography and erotic photography. \nIEPPV will have numerous models with a variety of backgrounds\, lingerie\, bikinis\, etc. for you to photograph.  You are invited to bring your camera\, lenses\, tripod and lighting. \n  \n\n  \nENTRY COST\n\nIEPPV Premium Members = FREE\nIEPPV Introductory and Professional Members = $75\nNon-IEPPV Members = $150\n\n  \nREGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS\nIEPPV Premium\, Professional\, and Introductory Members: \nYour membership number is required at registration or you cannot complete the registration process. SUMMARY:Pioneer Town Movie Set
DESCRIPTION: Registration for this event is now closed.\n  \nPioneertown was built in 1946 in the community of Yucca Valley and started as a live-in Old West motion picture set. The set was designed to provide a place for the actors to live while using their homes in the movie.  A number of Westerns and early television shows were filmed in Pioneertown\, including The Cisco Kid and Edgar Buchanan’s Judge Roy Bean.  Roy Rogers\, Dick Curtis\, Russell Hayden and Gene Autry were among the original developers and investors. \nStrolling down Mane Street is an experience. An abandoned bowling alley stands opposite a jail\, bathhouse and bank. Carts of “dynamite” sit like props in the dusty street\, presumably from the weekly Old West re-enactments. Unsettlingly realistic dummies slouch in rocking chairs on porches\, and fake crows are tied to rails and posts. You pass a grave with a wooden sign proclaiming “Welcome.”  The houses on Mane Street look more like live-in works of art than homes. \nSaturday morning will consist of several training sessions including: \n\nEnvironmental lighting\nBalancing speedlites with ambient light\nUsing reflectors for fill light\n\nWe will then take those newly learned skills and apply them to photographing models around town. \nSaturday afternoon will include a training session on “Posing Live People” as individuals and small groups. \nSunday morning will include a training session and then a Question & Answer session with several full-time professional photographers & several IEPPV Board Members answering your questions.  Any and all subjects regarding photography are open for discussion. \nThe day concludes at noon to give you time to travel home. \n  \nITINERARY & ACCOMMODATIONS\n\nPlease reference the event itinerary (recently updated) for day-to-day details.\nIf you need recommendations for accommodations\, please click here.\n\n  \n\n  \nENTRY COST\n\nIEPPV Premium Members = FREE\nIEPPV Introductory and Professional Members = $150\nNon-IEPPV Members = $400

SUMMARY:Micro Adjusting Lenses
DESCRIPTION: Registration for this event is now closed.\n  \nThis class will teach you the various methods of micro adjusting each of your lenses to each of your camera bodies. There is a “learning curve” to understanding how to micro adjust your camera and lenses. Attendance to this class will shorten that learning curve. \nBring your camera with a freshly charged battery\, a couple of your lenses\, CF or SD cards\, a sturdy tripod and a willingness to listen and learn. \n  \nTHE IMPORTANCE OF “MICRO ADJUSTING” LENSES TO CAMERA BODIES\nCameras and lenses are manufactured on assembly lines and tolerances apply to that process. \nIf you’re lucky\, you get a camera and lens that are both spot on\, or are “off” by an equal amount in the same direction and life is good. If you have multiple lenses and/or bodies\, chances are one or more will need some micro adjustment. \nThe other factor is depth of field (DoF) – the wider the aperture\, the shallower the DoF. With relatively narrower apertures\, such as the f/3.5-5.6 range commonly found on consumer zoom lenses\, the DoF is deep enough to mask minor focus errors\, so micro adjusting is not as important in those cases. \nIn addition\, because fast lenses achieve a shallow DoF\, even small focus errors are very evident. Also\, with the newest higher resolution chips\, small focus errors become even more pronounced.  Prior to the availability of micro adjusting\, the only option to correct these issues was to send camera(s) and lens(es) into the manufacturer and you had to send your entire kit to them. \nNo camera will consistently produce a perfectly focused image every time at every distance\, and no adjustment procedure will change that. What a proper micro adjustment can do is increase the percentage of shots that are correctly focused. \n  \n\n\nENTRY COST\n\nIEPPV Premium Members = FREE\nIEPPV Introductory and Professional Members = $20\nNon-IEPPV Members = $30\n\n  \nREGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS\nIEPPV Premium\, Professional\, and Introductory Members: \nYour membership number is required at registration or you cannot complete the registration process. SUMMARY:Capturing the Elusive Moment
DESCRIPTION: This class is available to ALL who would like to attend\, including non-members!\nIt can be difficult to create and bring to life what your mind sees and imagines. Many of us feel creatively stifled at times and find it difficult to see beyond our line of sight. Then again at times we have a very clear image but need the inspiration\, knowledge and tools to create it. It can be difficult to break the barriers needed to take us beyond our comfort zone. \nKen Sklute\, a Canon Explorer of Light\, has had a diverse and long career in photography and continuously challenges himself to learn new techniques to create images he’s imagined first. Come learn with Ken and push yourself to reach the goals in your photography you’ve been meaning to explore but haven’t until now. Ken will share his techniques with you about photographing some rather challenging subject matter like capturing lightning\, tornados\, lava and the elusive Aurora Borealis. SUMMARY:Up Close and Beautiful Round 2 - Macro Photography
DESCRIPTION: ATTENTION: Registration is now CLOSED.\nIs macro photography something you’ve been wanting to explore? Perhaps the difficulties – and being honest\, there are some – have been holding you back. This program and hands-on experience will give you the jump-start you need to discover the sheer joy of doing macro the smart way. Here are the highlights: \n  \nYou want to… \n\nGet into macro photography with a modest investment in equipment. We’ll explore ways to achieve high image quality without that $1\,000 macro lens. Amazingly\, there are optics that were designed for excellent macro imaging that can be picked up for pocket money – if you know what to look for.\nMaster the challenges of limited depth-of-field in close-up work. You’ll learn techniques to make the most of short depth-of-field as well as effective ways to get more depth-of-field when you need it.\nHave fun with your new-found skills. Bring your camera\, tripod and any macro gear you may already have. But don’t let any lack of equipment hold you back: for Canon and Nikon shooters\, there will be lenses and accessories available for you to experiment with. This is definitely a hands-on workshop!\n\n  \nThis promise to be an educational and entertaining event. Join us and be amazed! \n  \nABOUT FRANK PEELE\nFrank has a passion for photography that began before he was a teenager – and it’s stronger today than ever. Following a 30-year career in the U. S. Navy as a photographer and photographic officer\, he established a practice in commercial and fine-art photography in Redlands. He became active in the Inland Empire Professional Photographers and Videographers (IEPPV)\, where he is a Past President and Honorary Life Member\, and in Professional Photographers of California where he is a Qualified Competition Judge and Judging Panel Moderator. \nHe earned bachelor’s and master’s degrees in motion picture production and film education from the University of Southern California. He is a PPA Certified Professional Photographer who in 2013 was inducted into the PPC Hall of Fame\, and the same year also became the first inductee into the IEPPV Hall of Fame. Frank believes that one of the great creative opportunities in photography is to use macro techniques to get close to subjects of many kinds\, revealing beauty that is not always obvious to the unaided eye. He’ll be teaching an immersive five-day class in macro photography at West Coast School in June of 2016 at the University of San Diego. \n  \n
